fuel limit.
1936 - No maximum engine capacity. 37.5 gallon maximum fuel limit.
1937 - As 1936, but commercial pump fuel compulsory.
1938-56 - 4500cc normally aspirated and 3000cc supercharged maximum engine
capacity.
1957-68 - 4200cc normally aspirated and 2800cc supercharged maximum engine
capacity.
1969-70 - 4200cc normally aspirated, 2650cc turbocharged and 5000cc
stockblock rocker arm normally aspirated maximum engine capacity.
1971 - 4200cc normally aspirated, 2650cc turbocharged and 5878cc
stockblock normally aspirated maximum engine capacity.
1972-78 - 4500cc normally aspirated, 2650cc turbocharged and 5878cc
stockblock normally aspirated maximum engine capacity.
Turbo boost restrictions progressively introduced from 1973.
1979-84 - 4500cc normally aspirated, 2650cc turbocharged and 5878cc
stockblock normally aspirated maximum engine capacity.
1985-94 - 2650cc turbocharged maximum engine capacity. 5878cc stockblock
engines phased out, with only teams which had consistently used
them in the past (for example, at Indianapolis) allowed to
continue using them.

In 1926-27 the Secretary of the AAA Contest Board Val Haresnape retrospectively
announced champions for 1909-15 and 1917-19 based on all AAA races (five-mile
dashes, class results and city-city marathons). In 1951, Russ Catlin further
revised the official AAA records, publishing new results for 1902-08, amending
the 1909 Haresnape champion from Bert Dingley to George Robertson, and awarding
the 1920 series to Tommy Milton. These results are all listed below.
