Panoz, Don (USA)


Founded the Mylan Pharmaceuticals Company in 1960, and in 1969 he moved to Ireland, where he set up the Elan Corporation, which developed the nicotine patch. In 1981, he founded the Chateau Elan Winery and Resort, which was close to Road Atlanta (which he purchased in 1997). Set up Panoz Automotive in 1988 with his son Donny, and developed the Esperante GTR-1 with which they hoped to win Le Mans. This didn't happen, but he purchased the leases of Sebring and Mosport, and set-up the American Le Mans Series, and entered the series with his own Panoz Roadster.

Although emergency crews were on the scene immediately, Pistole was transported by helicopter to the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Chief engineer at Mercedes in the 1920s, Porsche set up his own design bureau in Berlin. In 1933, Auto Union hired Porsche to design their new Type A. He was also technical director of the Austro-Daimler Company.
