Notes:-

  • Schumacher spun at the 180 corner at the end of the session, ending up in the gravel.
  • Coulthard and Hakkinen both went into the gravel at the 180 corner, Hakkinen escaping.
  • Alesi stopped at the pit-exit towards the end of the session.
  • Hill finished the session in his T-car after colliding with Frentzen when turning into Adelaide, not having checked his mirrors. Frentzens left front wheel was removed, and Hill later apologised to Frentzen personally. Hill also went gravel crossing at the final chicane.
  • Brundle's Jordan Peugeot, the fastest car, was 11kph faster on the final straight than the Ferrari of Schumacher.
  • Neither Forti took part in this session.
