Warm-up

  • Weather: drizzle, clearing later
  • Coulthard first out. All on wets bar Alesi. Not that wet as none of the cars were displaying 'rooster-tails' as they drove around. The problem was that the track was very greasy. It was to wet for slicks and too dry for the wets to work properly.
  • Bernie Ecclestone had been awarded the BRDC Gold Award at the end of Saturday.
  • Frentzen had a minor spin at Brooklands on his first lap, but got going again. Drivers were short-shifting to avoid problems getting the power down.
  • Hill set a 1:58.990 on Wets, followed by a 1:34.879 a few minutes later on slicks. Katayama set a 1:49.818, Barrichelloa a 1:48.446, before Alesi set a 1:45.006 followed by a 1:39.116 to go first until Hill did his slicks time.
  • 17 minutes. Alesi set a 1:32.186 (-2.693) and then pitted. Panis went 2nd on a 1:33.411 (+1.225). Coulthard set a 1:35.599, Panis a 1:32.037, 1st (-0.149s), Frentzen a 1:32.754 (3rd), and Brundle a 1:34.122 (4th).
  • 21 minutes. Hakkinen went 1st on a 1:31.904, and this was immediately beaten by Panis who set a 1:31.033 (-0.871s). Track conditions were improving all the time.
  • 23 minutes. Hakkinen went fastest again, setting a 1:30.401 (-0.632s). Brundle set a 1:31.244 for 3rd.
  • 24 minutes. Schumacher went fastest on 1:29.889
  • 25 minutes. Alesi set a 1:29.893 for 2nd, which became third when Hakkinen set a 1:29.702 to go fastest again.
  • 26 minutes. Hill out again, grabbing fastest time by 0.006s (1:29.696).
  • 27 minutes. Villeneuve 3rd, 1:29.727.
  • 29 minutes. Villeneuve set a 1:29.788 (+0.671s), having been up at the second split. Hakkinen reaffirmed his superiority setting a 1:29.117.
  • 30 minutes. Fight over. Hakkinen recorded another fastest time (1:28.993, -0.124s), and Villeneuve went second with a 1:29.093 (+0.100s), having dropped 0.2s in the final section.
