Hungarian GP - Warm-up

Sunday August 11th

* Cars were ready to go out on a mixture of wets and slicks for the first installation lap.

* Hakkinen was first out, followed by Alesi and Salo. Only Frentzen and Villeneuve stayed out to do another lap. Interestingly Villeneuve was on slicks, while Hill was on wets. Villeneuve pitted next time around.

* Shortly Schumacher came out for a second time, this time in his spare car. He stayed out to record a flying lap, setting a 1:20.848. Alesi also came back out, recording a 1:22.249 (+1.401), 2nd.

* Hill then trundled around the next lap until he found a suitable gap for a flyer (on slicks). The Williams was looking much better than any of the others over the bumps, and the team only needed 2 points to take the constructors championship, equalling Ferrari's total of eight. It has taken Ferrari since the 1950s to manage this, only since the 70s for Williams. Irvine set a 1:21.350, 3rd, Herbert a 1:22.061, 5th, and Verstappen a 1:22.464, 6th.

* 12 minutes. Alesi 1:21.342 (+0.630, 3rd), Schumacher 1:18.971 (-1.741, 1st), Barrichello 1:21.369 (+2.398, 5th).

* 18 minutes. Irvine 1:21.653 (+2.682) with lots of understeer. Villeneuve 1:19.818 (+0.847, 2nd). Frentzen 1:21.009 (+2.038, 4th). Berger 1:21.259 (+2.288, 5th).

* 20 minutes. Coulthard 1:21.717 (+2.746, 11th). Hill 1:19.976 (+1.005), 3rd. Verstappen spun off onto the grass but got back on track and went into the pits.

* 24 minutes. Diniz pulled off trackside with mechanical problems.

* 25 minutes. Schumacher set a 1:20.165 (+1.194).

* 27 minutes. Villeneuve 1:20.518.

* 29 minutes. Schumacher set a 1:23.366, followed by a 1:19.341 (+0.370). Hill set a 1:19.915 (+0.944), but as he went over the finishing line he was deliberately driving down the right side of the track to try and clean the line he would be starting from. He then pushed hard on his slowing down lap to clean the tyres.
