The race started cleanly, and Kelleners and Schmickler set about opening up a lead. Both Simon and Bergmeister set about following, but they gradually fell back. Horst Farnbacher was also in contention, along with Danny Pfeil, but a spin for Pfeil on the entrance to the stadium section for the first time dropped him down to 12th place, setting the scene for a brilliant recovery drive. Farnbacher headed for the pits on lap 2.

The Top 4 set about disappearing, while Pfeil put on a charge. He picked up one place on lap 2, another on lap3, followed by 2 on lap 4. He made it to fourth by flag fall, but ran out of time to catch the leaders.

The fight for fifth to tenth place was extremely entertaining, Mueller, Rohr, Car 44, Schrey and Willems racing nose to tail. Staebler, however, was going backwards down the field with a rough sounding engine. He eventually headed to the pits on lap 16.

Although in the penultimate position, Christian Ott decided to entertain the crowd, putting on a charge from lap 11. He was often fish-tailing under breaking into the Ostkurve, and more than once put wheels onto the dirt on the exit. Deciding that he had had enough excitement, his driving style changed, although his speed didn't. He gradually managed to haul himself forward, and had caught the car in front (Rohr) by flag fall.

Lap 18, and the third and fourth place cars of Simon and Bergmeister were nose to tail, Bergmeister looking to slip by. He had a look at the Sachskurve, but thought better of it. The next lap, and in the same place, Simon cracked under pressure, and span off into the kitty litter under breaking. The positions then stayed the same through to the flag.

Results:
1. Kelleners. 2. Schmickler. 3. Bergmeister. 4. Pfeil. 5. Mueller. 6. Staebler.
