San Marino GP

5th May 1996

Warm-up

All of the cars were ready to go out when 9:30 arrived. The majority of them only ran an installation lap and came back in. Eddie Irvine took his so gently that he didn't even remove the stickers from his new tyres. Only Katayama and Herbert stayed out.

Schumacher soon re-emerged though, using his race engine this time, not his qualifier. He set a 1:30.999, beating Salo's 1:32.480. He was held up by Rosset on the next lap, so he came back into the pits.

Hakkinen was out on track, but just couldn't get his car going as well as Coulthard's. Katayama was having slightly better luck, setting for the moment the third fastest time. He was demoted to fourth when Irvine set a 1:31.002.

Surprisingly, Johnny Herbert set the fastest time up to that point, setting a 1:30.898. However, the track was speeding up, and Irvine immediately set a 1:30.382. Villeneuve came out for an attempt, and set a 1:31.221 on his first flying lap. His next was a 1:30.335, but Schumacher had lowered his time to 1:29.340 by now, so Villeneuve went third. When Hill came out, both Williamses went temporarily top. Hill would have been the fastest of the two, but he got a lot of oversteer on one lap, dropping him back to seventh. Villeneuve managed a 1:28.700.

Coulthard emerged for his run, setting a 1:29.364, folowed by a 1:29.021, going third. Herbert had also improved, and had gone into 5th. But Alesi, Hill and Schumacher were all out, and time were going to continue to fall. Alesi's first lap was a 1:29.900 (8th), and Hill's a 1:28.912 (2nd). Hills next was a 1:28.028, putting him first. Schumacher just couldn't break into the 1:28s.

There was a big shunt for Alesi at the exit to the Piratella. He came out of the corner backwards, and luckily he scrubbed off most of his speed in the gravel trap, but he still lost his rear wing, and severely damaged his right front suspension. The session was stopped a couple of minutes later, although Alesi was unharmed. There was only 2:17 remaining, but the session restart was announced for 10:10am. This would allow drivers to get in one flying lap.

Schumacher was soon out again for a flyer, as was Hakkinen, who set a 1:29.566 (8th). As the chequered flag came out, Brundle gently span at Tosa, so no improvement there. Interestingly, neither of the Williams came out. Hakkinen managed to improve to 1:29.040 (5th), and Schumacher to 1:29.033 (4th).
